Slow start but a positive second half comeback
The opening fixture of the season saw an almost complete squad travel to Hove to take on the Hove Bulldogs. Captain for the day, and ultimately Man of the Match, JG, led the boys out for a final time in what was a close finish, falling just short. JG, enjoy your rugby in KL, you will be missed!
The teams scored 4 tries apiece, with the difference on the scoreboard just a single conversion. On the pitch the difference was in the start, where our tackling fell short of our usual high standards, whereas Hove defended extremely well. Taking 30 minutes to get into the game is a problem we will be working on!
The fixture saw debuts for 3 new 'signings' of the season, Charlie, Josh and Fin. Congratulations on your first outing in Black & Yellow! A special mention to Josh for his 2 tries on debut, with a 3rd being denied when he was held up at the posts! Well done all 3, and looking forward to future fixtures for all of you.
The second half seemed to see the cobwebs cleared and the team managing to get into their rhythm a bit more. The new line out laws for our age group meant lifting is now a thing, and this aspect of the game functioned very well, with William getting a mention from our forwards coach on the day, Mike Whitehead. Mike is the clubs senior captain and hooker, and must be thanked for his coaching of the forwards in the weeks prior to the match, and especially for travelling down to Hove to assist and coach prior to this game.
So, not the result we wanted, but a solid start with lots of positives for the season ahead. We take 2 points from the fixture, assuming a bonus point for 4 tries, and another for losing by less than 7? Not a bad result for an away game.
Next up : Brighton at home.
