End to End stuff at Heathfield
Score does not do the game justice. Strong performance from both teams.
A later kick off for our game on a cold and windy Remembrance Sunday didn't seem to suit the 'Bridge boys and having warmed up on a VERY heavy waterlogged training area we were surprised by the quality of the pitch we were to play on.
It took some time for both teams to settle in to their games and where we were strong Heathfield had other strengths leading to a cat and mouse game of sorts.
The 'Bridge rucking was strong and fast but Heathfield were quick and agile. The deadlock was finally broken just before halftime with Heathfield breaking the line and finally going over. That said the game was still evenly balanced with just the converted try separating the teams at the break.
Conditions were not good for handling or kicking it being cold and very windy but 'Bridge coped well with the wind (probably from all the training at the Rec in howling gales!) but the cold was another matter with many a pass not going to hand.
Injuries then started to show with Bobby and Callum E both going down with sore necks from being rolled over in the tackle. They both soldiered on however but Adam and Jacob both came off with knee problems meaning a reshuffle in the pack with Callum E propping for the first time this season and Arlo coming on at 8 to enable Braiden to move to 1. Tom H and Tom S both also had to come off through injury.
This enforced change did little to affect the scrum, we were mostly dominant both on our ball and theirs and whilst we may not have won the ball against the head we certainly made it difficult for them.
The cold and wind, together with the injuries started to take their toll with 2 unanswered tries from Heathfield in the last 15 minutes until the boys really dug in on their own tryline, turned the ball over and within 3 phases were awarded a penalty 8m from Heathfield's line.
A couple of attempts at battering the door down before Tom M barged over and got the ball down for a great team try. There was some excellent ball carrying shown in the build up and the boys were really fired up.
Unfortunately that proved to be our only score (the wind robbing Harry of his conversion) and Heathfield crossed over soon after making the score 25-5 at full time.
Disallowed tries from Reece and Adam would not have altered the result but do show how competitive we were despite the scoreline.
Ciaren and Tom M were judged to be men of the match for their strong performances but it was a close run thing with a number of other players.
Well done to all the boys you were complemented by their coaches on your progression since last year and on your rucking and ball carrying.
We may have a chance to settle the score later in the season if we can get a date to play them at home.
