Final game, Brilliant performance, excellent win
The best the boys have played - ever!
It was with some trepidation that we arrived at the swanky new Old Cats Pavilion, knowing that only a bare 15 players were available. Swanky it may have been but at least you can get a cup of coffee at 9.30 at Edenbridge!
Injuries and other "stuff" meant that of the 15 players available we were short of any regular props, a flanker and a lock. A quick shuffle of the deck saw Arlo and Callum step into the front row void, with Jordan and Jack pressed into service on the flanks and Bobby moving into the engine room. A worrying time for the forwards coaches but we need not have fretted.
Within 7 Minutes Jordan had hared off to score in the corner (forgetting about poor old Harry and not getting under the posts!)
Not the day for kicking and certainly not the underfoot conditions Harry tried hard to reach the posts but ultimately fell short.
'Bridge had most of the play following and scored again through Leon, again in the corner, Poor Harry!
This try seemed to galvanised the Home team and they replied in quick succession also failing to kick the extras. Game on!
It was then determined defense vs a resilient attack and a wonderful game to watch. The last 10 minutes saw Arlo go over under the posts (much to the delight of Harry who duly converted), Ciaran cross (again in the corner) and Old Cats with the last play of the half, score themselves.
Half Time 10-22.
The half time team talk was easy - keep doing what you are doing! Going downhill in the second half the boys took the instruction to "keep them in the corner" a little too literally! Note to self - tell them to "score" in the corner next time!
A little less action in the second half probably due to the 17 minutes we camped by the Old Cats try line without any points! Variously crossing to be held up, knock on over the line or be bundled into touch! Great defense from the home team especially considering they were down to 14.
As were we soon to be with an injury to Tom H at 10, again meaning a shuffle of the team and a 7 man pack.
Finally Jack crossed for his first try as a forward! - Guess where? Yup in the corner!
With 6 minutes to go we thought that might be it and given the physical state of the team, we were hoping that the whistle would blow. However, Old Cats decided that one more effort may prove worthwhile and shortly before the final whistle they scored again. They also scored the second of 2 kicks at goal for the extra 2 points.
Full Time 17-27 - a great win and an excellent game played with great spirit.
A euphoric but shattered 'Bridge 15 made their way back to the changing rooms with praise ringing in their ears.
It was by far the best team performance from the boys - ever. Made all the more special by the fact that so many were playing out of position.
They played for themselves and each other and left everything out on the pitch. It goes to show what they can actually do when they put their mind to it.
Playing like that every week will make us a force to be reckoned with next season but more importantly everyone, players, coaches and spectators really enjoyed the game and that is what it is all about.
Man of match was such a hard choice as everyone played their socks off. Ultimately it went to Leon for his tenacity and aggression as well as his running lines.
Special mentions however to Jordan (tackle machine) Ciaran (probably most metres made with ball in hand) and Tom H (deft kicks and chips), and to captain Callum who spoke to the Ref more than the coaches did in the bar after the game! So much so he thought he was being assessed!
Well done boys for a great end to the season. Everyone of you should be proud of your performance.
Roll on Under 16 Rugby!
