Edenbridge 50 - 0 Worthing
A solid opening game for the new Academy side.
With the newly formed academy team lining up against a talented Worthing team only fielding a side of 14 players, it was clear from the start that it would be a hard fought game.
Edenbridge got off to a good start with an early break away try from a penalty in the midfield. Edenbridge 5-0 up, sadly the try could not be converted.
As the first half went on the Worthing side were being given space to run and started to exploit the gaps we had given them by breaking through the line of defence several times causing the Edenbridge defence all sorts of problems. A fumble on the far side gave Edenbridge some breathing and running space and soon after 4 phases ran another try in under the posts. Edenbridge 10 – 0.
Great control from the base of the rucks by Michael Dickinson lead to some sustained pressure in the Worthing half with led to two more tries being run in before the half time break. Edenbridge 24 -0.
After a lapse in concentration in the Worthing 22 and a lapse in communication the Worthing pack drove the Edenbridge defence back time and time again. A simple mistake of sealing off in the ruck lead to a scrum in the middle of the pack. With the Edenbridge backs standing tall a powerful Worthing scrum maintained possession and looked dangerous with 6 – 7 phases played inside the Edenbridge 22. A phenomenal effort from the Edenbridge defence held up the Worthing forward over the try line for a 5 metre scrum. A huge shove from the Edenbridge pack overturned the scrum and looked dangerous down the blindside with a lovely weighted kick from Harry Warne and a big chase from JB Defour down the middle, smothering the Worthing fullback and overturning the ball. Kick ball ensued and moved from right to left out through the backs and in for another try. Edenbridge 31-0.
Time and time again the Worthing attack looked dangerous and pushed the defence as hard as they could, with a quick change of players the Edenbridge pack had a shuffle around and look even more dangerous around the fringes. A spilled ball led to Billy Wager diving on and winning possession, quick ball from the forwards led to gaps opening up and a snipping run led to another Edenbridge try dually converted. Edenbridge 40 – 0.
Edenbridge regained possession from the restart from a lovely weighted kick from Max Wilson to allow the Edenbridge pack to dominate and the final try came from a slick move through the backs in under the posts. Edenbridge 47-0.
With 9 minutes left to go and injury forced Worthing to concede the game. A hard fought game, although a one sided score line the game didn’t reflect this and full credit goes to Worthing. A dominant performance and win number one under the belt of the new Edenbridge academy.
