A great game and huge effort
Well done boys on what was certainly an emotional morning of rugby. Our number one objective was to start as we finished last week…….playing our game with pods drawing in the opposition and creating space for the backs. This we did very well and in the first half Jersey were never given the space to run as we knew they could. To a man our tackling was the best ever since we have played youth rugby and a huge technical improvement which is evident by the lack of injuries.
There are lots of positives to take from this game……
Forwards - the scrum was far stronger and moving Jared to 8 behind Ben and Max helped keep our shape and even when we were going backwards it was controlled and the hookers were able to get a second strike to clear the ball to the back foot. The tackling was fearless and whilst there were no monsters Jersey had some big strong runners. We were right to avoid getting into mauls by hitting the deck quickly in the second half but suffered a little due to the relaxed policing of the breakdown. The pods worked and there was far more positional awareness as players gathered for the next phase.
Backs - again fantastic tackling and knowing that they were strong out wide there was very little space allowed. Tackling fast big players at pace is not easy and so Charlie, Jonty and Max FS are due a huge credit for the number of cover tackles which curtailed a number of try scoring opportunities. The half backs were a cohesive unit and made good decisions providing clean ball for the backs to take on Jersey at their own running game.
So what can we learn from the opposition, because they are a very strong team. We have talked a lot about working ‘off the ball’ and playing ‘what is in front of you’. Whilst have improved week on week these two aspects were probably the difference between the two teams. Jersey won more than their fair share of 50/50 loose ball and worked harder to be realign which is why they made us work so hard in defence when mistakes were made or the ball was turned over. As we gel as a team and get more confidence in the roles we have there is no reason why we cannot play in the same way.
