Old Knackers (and help) in a local derby
East Grinstead visit for the second time in 3 weeks but this time they want revenge!
The 3rd outing for the Old Knackers against our local rivals of East Grinstead proved to be an interesting match and the first for the oldies with the new tackle rules.
To be fair, with the recent games being more of a whole club team the only real difference pre match was the outside temperature. Its as if the weather realised us old boys don't like the cold! (No gloves required this week!)
With our Talismanic captain, Benny, out through injury and a few late no shows members of the firsts and academy stepped in at the last minute to give us a decent side with some replacements. This is more than can be said for East Grinstead who needed considerable help from Old Beccs to field the team.
Given the lack of training together (none!) the team gelled well and there was considerably more passing throughout the game principally because Benny was on the touchline!
There were more than the usual number of penalties, mostly for high tackles under the new laws, although, as the pack were so dominant we chose to scrum rather then kick more often then not.
Rucking was good, scrum was excellent (its all in the engine room you know!) and support for each other was as good as we have come to expect from the Old Knackers. A great team spirit!
Highlights of the game (tries being to numerous to mention) were Brandon Taggert's cameo appearance before going off injured with a broken finger nail or some such, Chris Lewis being handed of by their (very) young fly half who appeared only to use his little finger, and Dom Mitchell's screaming run down the touchline for a cross field kick, although being offside might have made that look better then it otherwise would have been.
How Dom Liggins failed to get man of the match for his double tackle I will not know but maybe that was Karma for an earlier game!
It was a great game played with real club spirit and (for a change for the Vets) quite a bit of passing.
Thanks to those youngsters and Firsts who helped out with the numbers.
Roll on another victory this coming Saturday!
