Edenbridge 2nd XV vs Beccehamian RFC, Friendly
In what was a rather scrappy affair, Edenbridge 2nd XV claimed their first win of the season in emphatic style. The game began brightly enough with The ‘Bridge keeping themselves comfortably within the oppositions 22. The game plan appeared to be pressure their unconfident winger with probing kicks into the corner. Sure enough they were kept on their line for the majority of the first quarter.
The game began to break up a little and Beccehamians worked their way into the Edenbridge half. Play remained lose however and Aidan Purvis spotted a loose ball and ran it up from the half way line for the first score of the game.
Edenbridge still persisted with a kicking game which was becoming increasingly loose and Beccs looked likely to capitalise on all the possession which was being gifted to them. Finally Edenbridge utilised “Big” Willie to his best effect and he crashed through the Beccs’ line to score. 10-0 to Edenbridge.
Half time arrived and there was a raft of substitutions made. This didn’t unsettle the team too much and, again, Edenbridge stayed away from the kicking game. Unfortunately the hosts were not prepared to be whitewashed and used their superiority at the scrum to work their way up the pitch. This resulted in a penalty about 15 metres out from the Edenbridge line which was run in for 5 points under the posts. Somehow the conversion was missed so Edenbridge were up 10-5.
The game continued in the slightly scrappy vein which it had done for the preceding 65 minutes with ‘Bridge looking much the better team. The light and conditions were failing and the error count upped from both sides.
The final say of the game though lay with Edenbridge who ran in their third try through Jasper Mussi who had moved to Number 8. Bobby weaver added the extras to leave the score at 17-5.
A fantastic game played in the spirit of rugby with some flashes of real promise for the remainder of the season.
