Edenbridge vs STC Footscray, Friendly
Edenbridge ended the 2007/08 season with an mixed 1st/2nd XV team running out short handed over a Footscray side desperate to end their season with a win. It looked as though Edenbridge had already packed up in anticipation of the End of Season Dinner. That’s not to say ‘Bridge lacked commitment but there was none of the spark that has been seen across both sides at times this season.
The game began spritely enough with Chris Norris looking to cap his season as top points scorer of emphatically with a carving run that saw him slip through at least five tackles. Bobby Weaver added the extras. Norris went in for another try but the conversion proved to be too wide for Weaver.
‘Cray demonstrated some lovely flowing rugby to create an overlap against a tired looking Edenbridge defence to score their first try; their fly half just missing an impressive conversion attempt from the touchline. The visitors came back again though to score two more tries, this time converting both despite one of them being from the same place as the first (missed) kick.
‘Bridge could have had a third try in the second half but the clinical edge was lacking and a simple pass went to ground that would have seen Norris in for his hatrick. The cynical might believe that Chris just wanted to avoid buying a jug after the game.
Man of the Match was awarded to Tom Moody for an almost faultless display in defence; he was not noticed to have missed a single tackle all game, even against the rather large visiting number 8.
