Edenbridge vs East Peckham, Kent Merit League 'B'

This match was the third time is as many games that The 'Bridge has had to defend their second position in the league to the team directly beneath them. The first two challengers, Aylesford and Gravesend were dealt with emphatically. Would the same fate await East Peckham, this weekend's visitors to Coombe Field? To add an extra dimension to the game at stake was also the Jubilee Cup, played over to commemorate both clubs' foundings.

A slightly unfamiliar home pack fronted up to the always large East Peckham forwards and the majority of the opening half was all Black and Gold. Yet another try for Norris was converted by Edmonds. Edenbridge lost their scrum half, Purvis, with a bad arm injury to have him replaced by Tipler playing out his preferred 13 shirt.

Still without reply, Dobson added a second try for the home team with more extras from Edmonds. 14-0 at half time and the visitors had yet to threaten the home line in any major way.

The second half saw Edenbridge conspire to give the game away in the last 20 minutes. The majority of the half saw little chance for either side with a solitary Edmonds penalty keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Another injury saw Battle go to the blood-bin to be replaced by Lucas and Batchelor had to be switched for Moody making his first appearance for the 1st XV since early season.

East Peckham struck back against a napping Edenbridge to notch up two quick tries both of which remained unconverted. The game ended on with the score at 17-10; the trophy retained but perhaps a crucial bonus-point given to the visitors.

A man of the match performance from young second row Chris Jageurs making his first start in the 1st XV in only his third month of senior rugby.
